1. Uncover when your contract is due for renewal
In united kingdom most of the energy supply are in fixed contracts for their gas and/or electricity. That means you can only switch at the end of the contract period and you also need to give a notice by a certain gap before leaving the energy supplier.

2. Give adequate notice to your existing supplier
Most energy suppliers have extends their contracts automatically at the end of a contract, if you have not given notice. You will automatically be switched over into a new contract, may be for one or two years in length depends on the energy suppliers.
